The CHPC Foundations of Theoretical and Computational Science Summer School was established in 2011 by the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) to develop programming and computational skills among postgraduate researchers across South Africa. Its aim was to equip students with practical skills in programming, high-performance computing and computational science. In 2019, the CHPC began collaborating with the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS), expanding the programme’s focus to include data science and machine learning. Now in its 16th year, and 8th year of collaboration with NITheCS, the programme is known as the Coding Summer School on Data Science and Machine Learning, hosted annually across multiple universities and research institutions in South Africa and the broader Southern African region.

The Coding Summer School has grown into a nationwide programme, reaching students across all universities and research institutions throughout South Africa. Through its hybrid delivery model, lectures and training are delivered online, while students attend in person at designated university and research venues across the country. This approach enables students from different regions to participate simultaneously, providing broader access to quality training in programming, data science and machine learning, while encouraging collaboration between institutions.
