The primary objectives of the education and outreach programme are: |
| • |
to create public awareness of the role computational science, particularly high performance computing plays in real-life situations |
| • |
to promote computational science at schools and tertiary institutions |
| • |
to encourage school learners to consider careers in computational science and engineering. |
| • |
to equip learners with a basic knowledge and skills of computer software and hardware |
| • |
to encourage the inclusion of computer science as a school-level subject. |
| |
Computational science awareness activities in outreach programmes include: |
| • |
Visits to the Centre for High Performance Computing where presentations are offered on CHPC research activities and the Visualisation Laboratory is visited |
| • |
Learner and educator workshops, which include computer software and hardware training, a computational science quiz, training of the National Computer Olympiad finalists, and Computational science camps |
| • |
Projects, such as National Science Week, Role modelling on Women’s Day, the CHPC and South African Science Foundation for Youth school outreach in Limpopo, and High Performance Computing exhibitions. |
