Mary-Jane Kgatuke, a CHPC research scientist and PhD student at the University of Pretoria who specialises in meteorology, is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the Earth Science Projection and Analysis (ESPA) laboratory at the CHPC. The laboratory will support weather and climate model development in South Africa, the running and verification of models, the processing of remote sensing data sets as well as data management and distribution of both model simulations and observations.

The specific objectives of ESPA are as follows:
to establish and maintain a complete research, development and testing platform for weather and climate modelling;
to support the collection of observational data through remote sensing techniques;
to provide support for data management through the dissemination of both observed and simulated data sets;
to participate in collaborative projects;
and to support related educational initiatives
